Original iPad Doesn’t Support iOS 6, What it Means for Consumers
Article by Vic HargraveFiled under: Ask Vic,Mobile,Tips and Tricks,Viruses and Malware | RSS 2.0 | 12 Comments |
When iOS 6 was released, I was surprised to find out that my first generation iPad device does not support the upgrade but the iPhone 3GS does - even though the 3GS hasn’t been sold since 2009. I’m not sure why Apple has decided to leave the roughly 84 million iPad 1 devices in circulation out in the cold yet continue to support the iPhone 3GS.
What does the lack of iOS 6 support mean for iPad 1 owners?
iOS 5.5 still offers fairly solid security so your iPad 1 is not in any immediate danger. True, you will lack the iOS 6 bells and whistles but 5.5 isn’t exactly a dinosaur. By the way, if you haven’t upgraded to iOS 5.5 there is no better time to do it than now.
Every iOS device running a version 4.3.4 of the operating system is susceptible to an SSL man-in-the-middle-attack, which is made possible by weak validation of certificates for SSL (secure sockets layer) network connections.
Without continued security upgrades, iPad 1 devices will become increasingly vulnerable to attack over time. Take the iOS 4.3.4 example I just cited. Think about what would happen to iPads if they were stuck at iOS 4.3.5 with no hope of upgrade. They would be forever be susceptible to the SSL man-in-the-middle-attack.
This is a situation all too common in the Android world where a large percentage of Android devices are orphaned. Don’t expect Apple to orphan iPhones to the same degree as Google has, but it pays to watch how Apple handles future upgrades.
Those of you who own an iPhone 3GS may be the next ones to be left behind by future generations of iOS.

I feel your pain. Again, though, iOS 5.5 is no slouch from a security standpoint. Also you can still buy apps from the AppStore, so at least Apple hasn’t stopped supporting the original iPad altogether. |

I was disappointed that my 23-month-old $829 iPad couldn’t install iOS6, but became angry when I tried to install an updated app that refused to install on anything less than iOS6. I seriously doubt I’d ever buy another iPad if that’s how Apple will force it obsolete. |

I just left a heartfelt lengthy rant over the original iPad not supporting iOS 6 and wanted to say what triggered my outrage. |

Same as you guys. My device is only 21 months old. If I would have known then that I would have limited upgrade ability for iOS,. I would have bought a much cheaper unit. Could have replaced it many times over. Very frustrating when an app forces an update and you can’t because you don’t have iOS 6. Apple essentially made our products very expensive paperweights. |

Last week, I noticed my iPad 1 had lost one of the two stereo output channels. The Genius at the Apple store had me reset the iPad and said that I could restore it off my iCloud account. The sound is fixed, but now none of my photos will come through from My Shared photo stream accounts, because I don’t have iOS 6. If I restore from my computer via cable, the stereo is lost again. What beautiful thing. Well, we all knew things would start to stumble after Steve was gone. Apple has made a $deal$ with the $devil$ and is going to auger into the ground if they keep this kind of sloppy, elitist approach to computing. I own three iPads, six iPhones, a Macbook Pro an iMac and six PC laptops. My PCs never screw me for upgrades. |

Saturday, 27. October 2012 at 3:35 amI own an iPhone 4 s an I Mac 24″ an I Pad 1, two 8gig I pods, and I find out that iOS6 does not work with the original iPad.. I do not like a two year deadline for new software. These products are too da—-ed expensive not to support. I love my apple products but do have other options. The world may be crazy about Apple right now but put my $800.00 product out of the new software range in just under two years is not only not acceptable, it is forced obsoleting. Not fair Apple, but you do make a lot of money.
